March Hike – Padilla Bay Trail
The March hike is along the Padilla Bay Trail. The flat trail goes on top of a dike along the saltwater shore of the
Skagit River delta. This trail is popular with bird watchers, and there may be migratory birds in addition to shorebirds, eagles and falcons.
One of the first features at the start of the hike is an often-photographed old barn where great blue herons can frequently be seen hunting in the muck around it. There are views across the bay (if the weather is clear) of Mt. Baker to the northeast.
The hike is 4.4 miles round trip with minimal elevation gain. Hikers will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday March 21st in front of the Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park. Mask optional. Carpool riders share the cost. No permit needed to park the car. Those leaving from Volunteer Park will arrive at the trailhead around 11:00. Hikers can expect to get back to Seattle by 3:00 p.m.
